The Perro Tlapazola Planter is a whimsical piece made in collaboration between Oaxacan ceramisct, Iohan Figueroa, and the women artisans of San Marcos Tlapazola - a rural Zapotec village of about 1,100 people an hour’s drive from Oaxaca City, where 300 or so potters are all women.

Women in this community have been making pottery out of locally-sourced red clay for 20 generations, specializing in cookware such as: comales (platters used for making tortillas) and ollas (pots for cooking). The women tirelessly handle each step themselves, from mixing the clay, to hand-forming each piece, to firing them in an open kiln made on the ground.

Each piece, being made of just earth, water, and sand, has its own personality - slightly different shape and texture, distinct markings, and some even with traces of smoke and soot from the firing.

Red clay is part of this community's tradition and way of life. In supporting this craft you're not only supporting the artisans and their work, you're supporting a civilization.

Therefore they may have small "imperfections" or slight variations of color and design between each product—we think that is part of the beauty of having something made with care by individual artisans. Our website photos are a close representation of this piece, but may not be identical to the one you receive.
