"Makaua" comes from the ancient Nahuatl language and has two meanings: ‘hand to hand’ and ‘giving a hand’, a sentiment that embodies what the company stands for. Based on this idea of valuing everyone’s “hand to hand work” Makaua has grown to currently include the collaboration of around 50 families, directly employing more than 150 people in the entire process. Since its inception in 2002 Makaua’s goal has been to preserve and show the world the traditional and sustainable technique of palm weaving. In collaboration with the artisan families of the region it embarked in producing high quality, modern and functional palm homewares, while providing a steady income and better living conditions to the palm weavers of Southern Mexico and their families.
